This year marked the very first year of our Upstanders in Action group, and what an incredible impact these students have made!
Over 50 4th-grade students volunteered their lunch time each week to attend groups focused on kindness, courage, and learning how to respond to unkind behavior. Through discussions, activities, role-playing, and puppet skits, students learned the power of “Stop, Support, and Report.” They discovered how to use their voices to stand up for others, support peers through difficult moments, and recognize the importance of reporting concerns to trusted adults.
That means 50 students were out on our playgrounds and in our hallways being true Upstanders in Action. Throughout the year, students found their voices, supported classmates, and helped adults intervene when needed. Teachers and students alike have reported significant positive changes since the beginning of the year — students feel more supported and less isolated, and many report that bullying behaviors have decreased.
To celebrate their commitment, students took an Upstander pledge and received t-shirts designed by three of our very own student Upstanders. We are incredibly thankful to our local businesses who donated funds to help purchase shirts and support our cause. Students even wrote letters and visited businesses to share information about the program.
Our Upstanders were also honored to lead the flag salute at the school board meeting and presented puppet skits during morning announcements to help educate and inspire our younger students.
We are so proud of these students for choosing kindness, courage, and action. The future is brighter because of them.
